My journalism career began online.
Here are my best samples of online writing, from the earliest story to the most recent (click the headlines to access the stories):
DISASTER DOS AND DON’TS
Sept. 12, 2018 – The Eagle Online
This was my first published story as Online Managing Editor, and it established my groove. I wrote the story, did research, and published it soon after I received quick edits. This piece needed to be published immediately because of the impending hurricane.
THROUGH MY EYES: GPA AND CLASS RANKS
Feb. 1, 2019 – The Eagle Online
I had always wanted to address this topic. However, halfway through the writing process, I began to have misgivings about talking negatively about the school. The angle that I took was not as strong as it should have been and did not allow me to say all that I had hoped. In the end, I learned a lot from working on this piece.
CHARLOTTE PROVIDES TEENAGE THEATRE FANS ACCESSIBLE OPPORTUNITIES
Nov. 6, 2019 – The Eagle Online
I wrote this story thinking it could go in the print edition. I realized that I couldn’t keep the quality intact and make it long enough for the physical paper, so I modified it for the website. This story would have been more impactful if our website garnered more traffic.
THROUGH MY EYES: MISGENDERING
Oct. 16, 2018 – The Eagle Online
When I was told that I should start a new blog, this is the first topic that came to my mind. In “Through My Eyes,” I write about topics that are important to me, and I give a unique student opinion on each. This story was my first attempt at a blog. I had trouble figuring out how to end it. While it is not as persuasive as I had hoped, it does shine a light on this important subject.
‘A STAR IS BORN’ ENTRANCES AUDIENCES
Apr. 2, 2019 – The Eagle Online
This was my first movie/entertainment review. I had a very quick turn around time with this story. I now realized that I should not have included so much plot. I haven’t written another movie review since, but I have used what I learned from this piece in editing my staff’s stories.
PETS MAKE APPEARANCES AT ZOOM UNIVERSITY
Sept. 17, 2020 – The Daily Tar Heel
This was one of my first DTH articles, and I’m still very proud of it! I loved gathering the interviews, hearing about everyone’s study buddies, and seeing the pictures they sent me for the story. It never made its way into print, but I’m still very happy with how it turned out.
I’m also learning code.
I designed the whole website linked above (yes, in the heading text) for a project in my MEJO 121 class at UNC.
I’ve worked with video a bit as well!
This was the midterm/final video assignment for my MEJO 121 class freshman year. I interviewed Cat Babbie, a fiber artist, and told a bit of her story through video.
This is a music video I made for my MEJO 121 class freshman year We were given archival footage to use, and had to pick our own song, so I chose Fidelity by Regina Spektor.
