MEJO 581 – User Experience Design and Usability

I decided to take MEJO 581 (UI/UX Design with Laura Ruel) as a second-semester senior, not knowing what to expect. And oh boy, did it stretch my design muscles while teaching me so many new things about web design and usability. Throughout the semester, we were given UI Sprints — small design/usability jobs to complete using Figma — all while working toward a final goal, which I’ll discuss in a second. They increased in interactivity, thus helping me learn this software. You can see the examples I’m proudest of below. Continue scrolling to find the final project portfolio.

UI Sprint #1 – The Season Cycle

We had to redesign a homepage and an interior page to highlight the seen elements. This was before I knew how to use Figma and before I knew what to include and what not to include. Click the images to enlarge them.

UI Sprint #2

This assignment was to design a 404 Error page for any website. I chose Webkinz. This time, I included more necessary navigational elements to make the site traversable.

UI Sprint #5

This final sprint was to design something having to do with pricing. My friend suggested a plant shop, so I took inspiration from something I know, the NC Botanical Garden. I decided to redesign their shop checkout for the desktop.

As for the final goal, we ended up helping redesign the Vanguard Digital Advisor dashboard, working closely with Steve Schang, a senior UX researcher there. Since this is my first project incorporating usability testing and THEN looking at it from a design angle, it took a while to get used to. We did basic usability tests, persona creation, card sorts, created wireframes, and did a final user test with high-fidelity mock-ups of the site we created. My process is linked, for you to explore.
